Pre-Service Teacher Training

MVHS works closely with the pre-service science teacher training program at the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) to ensure that the new generation of science teachers understand the importance of computational science tools in science teaching. Susan Ragan leads sessions in which the pre-service teachers explore a variety of computer simulations to see which ones would fit in their student teaching. Stacy Pritchett, MVHS leader, UMCP student teacher supervisor, and Loyola College adjunct instructor, infuses computer models into her work with both pre-service and in-service science teachers.

District-level Professional Development

MVHS teacher leaders have applied their training from MVHS to other teachers in their local school districts. By keeping their district-level science supervisors informed of the value that computational science adds to their science instruction, they have been able to influence the content of district-sponsored professional development workshops. Supervisors who see that simulations should play an integral role in a classroom teacher's instruction invite their local MVHS leaders to conduct modeling and visualization workshops for science teachers in their respective school districts.
