Drug Assimilation

Intravenous Drugs:

The study of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion is critical to establishing the correct dosages for intravenous drugs. The drug is introduced at a constant rate and is distributed by the blood to the various organs. The larger the per son, the higher volume of drug needed. The rate of drug elimination from the body varies directly with respect to concentration levels.

Create a STELLA model using the following assumptions:
Drug is introduced at the rate of 1 gm/min
Elimination rate is .58% of the drug per minute

Alter the model to achieve a concentration of 170 gm (± 10%) in 60 minutes.

If the kidneys begin to fail, the elimination rate will rapidly decrease. What happens then?

Drugs in Pill Form:

A fixed dose is taken once or at fixed intervals. The drug enters the stomach and dissolves, then is distributed exponentially to the rest of the body. The drug is broken down by the liver or excreted through the kidneys (exponentially).

Create a STELLA model using the following assumptions:
Two pills of 375 mg each are taken every 4 hours.
The drug leaves the stomach to go to the rest of the body at 4.6% per minute.
The drug leaves the body at the rate of .58% per minute.

If the patient misses a dose, should he double the dose the next time?
